Thorn was born to a tiny offshoot of the larger 'I' tribe, consisting of no more than two dozen members. Rejecting the traditional Seeker worship of Azeyma, they devoted themselves to the void, obsessed with ancient Mhachi magic - even choosing to live in and around the ruins of Belah'dia in Thanalan, which was founded by the survivors of Mhach who had lived through the Sixth Umbral Calamity. Commonly opening lesser void gates to allow lower-tiered voidsent through, they worshipped the demons, throwing debauched bacchanals nightly, to revel in the power they gained when willingly allowing themselves to be possessed for short times. Those of the tribe who showed reluctance - such as a young, terrified Thorn (known then as I'Shani) - were forced into being possessed repeatedly, under the assumption that they would adapt and grow to enjoy wielding the powerful magic they were granted access to through allowing the void creatures to take over their mind and bodies (though, he wasn't subjected to the more adult activities until he was an adult).When the Calamity hit and exposed the ruins of Sil'dih, an ancient city which had been founded by a Belah'dian prince after civil war divided Belah'dia, the tribe found an opportunity to move to a more secret location to continue their depraved adulation. Taking the Sil'dihn Subterrane as their new home, the surprisingly lush ruins provided water, beasts to hunt for food and most importantly, privacy... aside from the odd ruins-delver that occasionally happened through... who were usually sacrificed to voidsent, alas for them.It was during one of these twisted nighttime revelries that Thorn braved the paths of the Subterrane alone and made his way out of the ruins. At twenty-two summers, he fled to Ul'dah, with nothing more than the clothes on his back. For a while, he subsisted off whatever he could beg or steal, nothing more than a common street urchin, until one day, he ventured into the Arrzaneth Ossuary. He was found by one of the priests, tucked back in a corner with an ancient tome, consuming the contents of the text with a voracious curiosity.The priest spoke at length with the young Miqo'te and, upon learning that Thorn showed great potential for the art of thaumaturgy, agreed to take him off the streets and teach him all that he wished to know. When Thorn showed enough competence with what he had learned, the priest sent him to Lalai Darkeyes, a Lalafell woman who secretly practiced black magic.For years, he absorbed every scrap of knowledge she imparted, becoming quite powerful in his own right... however, in the back of his mind, he had never been able to forget the void magic he had been raised on since he was a child. Determined to use what he now knew to find new ways to eradicate voidsent, he turned to ruins-delving, exploring the secret places of the star where the deepest darkness lingered - and using the priceless relics he found to support himself by selling them at auctions and to private collectors.Having made quite a name for himself in both the underworld and legitimate artifact markets, Thorn found his traitorous thoughts turning back to his old tribe. He'd worked tirelessly for years, devoted himself to studying magic and becoming established as a relic-hunter, so much so that he hadn't had time to cultivate any sort of personal attachments. And, while he had hated his tribe, there had nevertheless been a sense of connection to others, an element sorely lacking in his life now. Simply put, he was lonely. Being raised in such a chaotic and abnormal environment had not taught him the acceptable public-facing social cues that most other people had, so the Miqo'te found himself frustratingly out of his element and grasping at straws. Taking up as a courtesan, freelance, has helped with that, with an association to the Corsair.So, he found himself applying to jobs on the Adventurer's board, more in a bid to meet other people, rather than raise funds for himself, which he already had plenty of, thanks to his illicit sales of his stolen artifacts. He's met a fair few people that he could call acquaintances, but has yet to find anyone he can call 'friend' yet, and trust with his secrets. Perhaps you will be that friend?
